What is this Women’s Circle?

We are a group of women who are professionals, mums, friends, partners, and so much more! We come from all corners of the world, and meet regularly to talk.

The aim of our circle is to offer a space for expat women in Groningen. Living in another country can be great, but it also brings a lot of challenges, and sometimes struggles too! This is a space to come and share your thoughts, ideas and experiences. A place to find empathy, perhaps a new friend, and a support network away from home.

This is also where we continue to practice our English while building a support community… a “tribu”.

How does it work?

At the circle we are guided by the principles of privacy,no judgement and empathy.

Our activity follows the Lean In structure (read more on https://leanin.org/circles). One of the highlights of our circle is using the Connection Cards. These were originally developed by a group of psychologists as an activity to help people create closeness. They are also known as “36 questions to fall in love”, as each question helps create and develop connection and closeness. Each session deals with one or two of these questions as the core of each meeting.

Disclaimer: This activity does not replace professional, psychological help (if needed), and it is intended as a space for sharing. The level or depth of participation and sharing during the sessions is up to each individual.

When? Fridays, 9:30 – 11:30 am
Where? IWCN Office
Who can join this? This activity is aimed at single, married, and/or divorced women (note: It’s OK if you want to join a session and bring your baby/child along. Just make a comment in the note section on the registration form, and make sure you indicate the age of your child as well)

Participants per session: Maximum of 8 participants per session.
Any other requirements? Participants should have a proficiency level in English of B1/B2.

* Previous registration is mandatory.

A little extra

I’m Cata and I’m the host. I am a Chilean living in Groningen with my family since November 2020. I am also a mum, wife, and a lecturer at the Hanze University.

* Covid Prevention: Stay home if you have flu symptoms. If you have been around someone with the flu, please do a self test before attending.

"There I was, sat in my Dutch house, after having fetched my children from their Dutch school, waiting for my Dutch husband to come home, feeling very integrated. And yet... Wouldn’t it be lovely to meet some other expats, speak English again, not feel so foreign, even just now and then? A quick internet search led me straight to Connect International. After a few false starts, I made it to a Connect Coffee Morning in Groningen. I received a warm welcome and was delighted to hear there was a Book Club, right here on my doorstep! We discuss the books in English, the discussions can become lively and are always interesting, and it is a good place to share our expat experiences too."

"My husband and I came to Groningen two years ago for his studies. At first, I had absolutely no acquaintance here. I felt lost, not knowing where to go, who to meet, nor what to do. I first found out about the Connect through the Coffee Morning. Everyone seemed very nice and welcoming. They all understood what I was going through. Since being expats themselves, most of them also went through this process when they arrived here. Then I started to join other workshops, such as culinary workshop, beauty workshop, etc. I learned many different cultures and I also dare to say that I met most wonderful bunch of friends here at Connect. "I moved to the Netherlands in 2010 to join my Dutch boyfriend (now husband). After nearly two years of trying to integrate into Dutch society I hit a low point, feeling lonely and isolated. That was when I learnt about Connect International and signed up to be a member. I started by attending the Coffee Mornings, then volunteered to help set up the Crafts Club and gave a few workshops about building WordPress websites (as I work as a freelance web developer). Connect (and its members) gave me friendship and support at a time when I needed it, and I hope to do the same for others in a similar position."
