We will explore the beautiful Drenthe area around Emmen which is rich in archeology and part of the geopark Hondsrug. One moment you are enjoying the birds and the next moment you are standing in front of two hunebeds on a heather field in the middle of the forest. Put your hand on these prehistoric tombstones and imagine yourself 5,000 years back in time. Present and past alternate during the 12 km walk.
We will walk visiting the following spots: Grote Kerk Emmen, Volk van Grada/Nabershof - the only remaining "saksische boerderij" (an old Dutch farm) in Emmen,Hunebed D41, D38, D39 and D40, as well as the Valtherbos, where during the Second World War a group of 16 jews hid from the Nazis. After the Valtherbos we walk into the Emmerdennen forest area, one of the oldest forests in Drenthe. Emmerdennen is also the place where you can admire the third largest hunebed in the Netherlands. According to tradition, the dent in the capstone of this hunebed was caused by King Louis Napoleon during his visit to Drenthe in 1809, standing on top of this hunebed with his horse. On our way through the Emmerdennen we will also encounter several lakes and the Haantjeduin, a sand dune 27 meters over sea level. We will finish our tour at Emmen station.
