Join us for our 2nd edition of Finding Friesland. Let’s put on our walking shoes and explore the beautiful city of FRANEKER! Franeker is brimming with history. It supposedly originated around 800, it’s name may be derived from ‘Froon-Acker’ which means ‘land of the king. There is quite an architectural heritage which you can see in the city hall (Renaissance), for example, as well as the St. Martin’s church (medieval)

On this half-day trip we will visit the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the oldest working planetarium in the world. This precise moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by the Frisian woolcomber Eise Eisinga. He was a genius with his greatest hobbies being astronomy and mathematics He taught himself about them, writing a math book at the age of 15 and completing an astronomy book two years later. The planetarium he built lets you see the current position of the planets. The planets revolve around the sun in the same time as the real planets.

After the museum visit, we will explore the city centre on foot and stop for lunch before returning home.

Depending on the amount of participants, we will go by train or by car. Te train departs from the Leeuwarden station at 10:45 am on Saturday, May 22. We will arrive back in Leeuwarden at 3:15pm. Departure and arrival times are flexible for those who wish to leave earlier or later.

Costs: Round-trip train ticket is €9.02, Eise Eysinga museum ticket is €6. Lunch is whatever you would like to spend.
