To the beach! The best places to dip your toes in Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe

After an exceptionally long spring (that often felt more like autumn), filled with lockdowns, curfews, and sideways rain; summer seems to have bloomed in the North. With temperatures in the next few weeks reaching the heady heights of almost 25 degrees centigrade (!), here’s some of the best places to head to for beach tennis, sandcastle-building, and maybe even a spot of light swimming.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice Cream!

It’s going to be hot, hot, hot this weekend in the Northern Netherlands, and whilst we advise that you check local news before heading to the beach or your local beauty spot (and remember to keep 1.5-metres apart when you get there), you can get that summer feeling anywhere in the North with a good scoop or two of ice-cream!

Panda cub born in Ouwehands Zoo in Rhenen

Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen is the only zoo in the Netherlands that has giant pandas. The two pandas, Wu Wen and Xing Ya, have been on loan from China since 2017. Back in January, the two pandas mated for the first time and it has been an anxious wait to find out if a baby panda was on its way.

All that waiting ended in celebration when, on May 1st 2020, Wu Wen gave birth to a baby panda cub.

Bevrijdings Festival

Drentse Koe

The Drentse Koe is a real dairy farm in Ruinerwold, Drenthe. In 1999 they started selling homemade ice cream from the fresh milk produced on their farm. Since then they have grown to a full-fledged recreation play-center for kids, with a large outside and inside play area and in 2017 they said goodbye to their dairy cattle to focus on the play-center, but continue to make ice cream using fresh milk from neighbouring farms.

A day on the water

In such heat water is so tempting, be it an ice-cold drink, a cooling shower, a refreshing rain, a stroll under the sprinkler in the garden or (the best of all) a day (oh, at least an hour!) by or on the water. Just thinking about water activities seems to be helping already. To make it easier for you to arrange a day on the water, we’ve decided to put together some addresses in the Northern Netherlands where you can rent a boat without the need of a sailing license.
