Takeaway and Food Delivery

You have had a long day, working, studying, cycling around the city, etc. All you want to do is go home and put your feet up, but what is for dinner?

There are several options if you want to order food to be delivered to your door, especially in the larger cities. Many restaurants will take food orders over the phone and either deliver or have them ready to pick up and bring home. But if you are not familiar with where you live, where do you start? Here are some of the main websites / apps that you can use to order food in the north of the Netherlands.

Thuisbezorgd.nl

With the largest collection of restaurants, Thuisbezorgd is a great website to see a range of restaurants and snackbars near you that offer home delivery or takeaway.

Simply enter your postcode for a list of everything that will deliver to you. You can filter the list by cuisine and see information about each restaurant such as its delivery fee, minimum order amount and opening hours. To order, select your restaurant, look through the menu and add the dishes that you want to order to the basket, proceed through the checkout and wait for your food to arrive. It is useful that you can select to pay by either cash to the delivery person, or online using iDeal, bankcard or PayPal.

Thuisbezorgd has an English version, which makes ordering a bit easier, but many restaurants only provide their menu in Dutch, so if you don’t know much Dutch, use Google translate to help pick something to eat. They also have an app that you can download for Android or Apple.

FoodDrop

Fooddrop is a Groningen-based food delivery company. They work with restaurants in Groningen to offer an alternative to pizza or snackbar takeaway, delivering healthy, nutritious culinary meals directly from the restaurant’s kitchen to you.

They work similarly to Thuisbezorgd in that you enter your postcode for a list of restaurants in your area that FoodDrop works with. Pick a restaurant, select what you want to eat, pay online (via iDeal, credit card or PayPal) and your food will be delivered within 30 minutes by a FoodDrop bike carrier.

Uber Eats

Similar to Thuisbezorgd, you will find a variety of restaurants and snack bars, and also some dessert places (home delivery of a donut ice cream sandwich from Puur? Yes thank you!). They are also the only platform currently offering home delivery from McDonald’s (since October 2018).

Currently however in the North of the Netherlands you can only enjoy their service in Groningen. The Uber Eats website is in English, but most menus are in Dutch. They also have an app that you can download for Android or Apple.

Via Chain Restaurants

Places like Subway, Domino’s pizza, New York Pizza, Kwalitaria etc. all offer online ordering via their website (and sometimes have an app for it too). You will have to check if there is a restaurants in your area that delivers.

Via Independent Restaurants

In the cities you will also have many restaurants and snack bars that won’t be listed on sites like Thuisbezorgd, but still offer home delivery. For these look at their website (or menu) for delivery options. Sometimes you can order through the website, otherwise you will need to place your order by phone. And when paying cash on delivery, keep in mind that the delivery person usually only carry €10 – €20 in change, and usually can’t accept card payments.
